Marfa Steps Up is a group of volunteer community members in Marfa, helping our town during the COVID-19 crisis. This group includes those who have made Marfa a home, proprietors of Marfa businesses that have closed, and those in Marfa service industries who have lost their wages. As needs continue to evolve, this website will be updated with new calls to action. Please consider volunteering or contacting us with needs as they arise.
Get Counted, Get Free Food
In September 2020, Marfa Steps Up teamed up with the Judd Foundation to partner with the Rio Grande Council of Government’s Far West Texas Census2020 effort to help get Presidio County residents counted for the US Census. Prizes including $50 gift cards at Porter’s, $50 gift cards at Convenience West BBQ, and free burritos at Marfa Burrito.
Buy Solidarity Bonds to Help Marfa's Restaurants
It’s critical that our restaurants survive temporary closures due to COVID-19, because they are the key to our town’s ability to serve both locals and tourists. Marfa's restaurants employ approximately 20% of the population, provide much needed diversity in our very limited local food supply, and are on the front lines of visitor experience.
From May 13 to June 1, 2020 "solidarity bonds" were on sale to give restaurant owners the funds to stay afloat during this time of uncertainty.
Eighteen artists in Marfa created bonds to help raise needed funds. Participating artists include Maryam Amiryani, Mary Baxter, Camp Bosworth, LéAna Clifton, J.D. Garcia, Jeffrey Hester, Martha Hughes, Zoe Leonard, Eileen Myles, Dustin Pevey, Sam Schonzeit, Shea Slemmer, Julie Speed, Nick Terry, Laszlo Thorsen-Nagel, Charline von Heyl, Leslie Wilkes and Christopher Wool.
Marfa Solidarity Bonds raised $85,920.
We are no longer selling these as fundraiser for the restaurants, but can send them for a donation to our local food pantry. Please email if you are interested in getting great art and helping our community.
Service Workers Relief Fund
At the closing of the Marfa Steps Up: Service Worker Relief Fund, the generosity of our donors helped us reach $48,868. Volunteers are now working to verify employment of those who registered for relief while we wait for GoFundMe to release funds to us.
Donations to the fund and registration for aid closed on Friday, April 10, 2020 at 11:59pm CST. Updates will be posted to the GoFundMe page.
Thank you for your support of the fund.
